Reading Tutor

I am Donna Duffy, reading tutor and owner of Reading With Success, LLC.  I have been a tutor for over three years now and I have been teaching for over 25 years. Prior to being a tutor, I was a kindergarten teacher for 16 years. My favorite part about teaching kindergarten was teaching young children to read. I use to tell my co-workers, I wish I could teach reading all day. I loved it that much! I was so passionate about it, that after I got my Masters in Elementary Education and my Reading Endorsement, I became a Reading Interventionist. I was thrilled to finally be able to teach reading all day!

I learned so much from that experience. I learned what worked and what didn’t, but most importantly I learned how little I knew about dyslexia. I noticed that no matter which school-adopted program I tried, some of my students were non-responders and were not progressing. That’s when I started learning all I could about dyslexia. 

The program I kept hearing about time and time again was the Susan Barton Reading & Spelling System. This program is difficult for schools to teach with fidelity because it is best taught one-on-one with as much time and repetition as needed by the student. That really appealed to me. I decided that upon retirement, I was going to start my own business and use the Susan Barton program to teach struggling readers. I have found the program to be extremely successful and parents are over-joyed with the results. Not only does the child learn how to read, but how to spell also.

This program works because it has a strong focus on phonics. It is hands-on, offers a lot of repetition and is presented in an organized, systematic way. The program is taught one-on-one and the student determines the pace of the class. I am proud to be a tutor, specialized in helping those with dyslexia.  I love reading and I hope I can bring that joy to many others.
